Funding brings more activities to Wallsend

“Young people in Wallsend will benefit from extra activities and support for the next three years, thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s ‘Reaching Communities’ programme.

A group of local partners, led by the Wallsend Action for Youth charity, has been successful in securing £386,595 from the Big Lottery Fund to provide additional activities and support for young people in the Wallsend area.

The money will be used for a range of regular events including a community youth choir, skateboarding, football and cookery sessions, plus improvements to three local youth clubs. It will also fund some specific support for young school leavers.

The organisations involved in the successful bid will also be involved in delivering the activities over the next three years. They are: Wallsend Action for Youth; St Pauls Community Centre at Willington Quay; St Mary’s Church; The Church of the Good Shepherd; Wallsend Boys Club; Willington Quay and Howdon Boys and Girls Club; Prometheus; Barnados; YMCA and NE Youth (NCYP).

The group of partners have been working together for the last five years to provide activities and outreach support for young people in the Wallsend area.

Cabinet member for Children, Young People and Learning, Ian Grayson said: “This is fantastic news and will be a welcome boost to the great work that is already happening in this area.

“The group of organisations behind the bid have an excellent track record of working successfully and sustainably with young people in Wallsend, including some of our most vulnerable youngsters, and it is great to know that funding for their activities has been secured for at least the next three years.”

Alan Strachan, Chair of the Wallsend Action for Youth group, said: “This is a great example of what can be achieved when organisations work together. It will mean we can continue to provide exciting opportunities for the young people of the Wallsend area.”

The Big Lottery Fund supports the aspirations of people who want to make life better for their communities across the UK. It is responsible for giving out 40 percent of the money raised by the National Lottery and investing over £650 million a year in projects big and small in health, education, environment and charitable purposes.”
