Hadrian’s Wall Challenge 2018 Blog

One Wall – One Day – One incredible Challenge!

On Saturday 26th May 2018, 160 young people from across eleven of our Member organisations took part in our first Hadrian’s Wall Challenge, to collectively walk the whole of Hadrian’s Wall in one day!

The challenge consisted of walking the whole 84 miles (yes, that’s over 3 marathons!) across the beautiful stretch of borders landscape, making this a great setting for our charity fundraising challenge. Members and young people all individually fundraised for their own charitable organisations, whilst working as a team to complete the challenge.

Hadrian’s Wall attracts walkers from all around the globe – it is the single most popular tourist attraction in northern England. The young people all had a great day, made all that better that the sun was out. The groups walked some of the deepest descents and enjoyed the breath taking views every step of the way, as well as learning lots of useful information and historical facts about the Wall and surrounding area from the guides who accompanied each of the eleven groups.

It was an amazing day and very challenging at times, despite the muscle cramps, blisters and high temperatures the young people all ploughed on. The young people all felt a sense of accomplishment having completed the walk.

The day ended off at the SILL (the National Landscape Discovery Centre), with a celebration presentation, food and entertainment from our very talented Young Ambassador Channy Thompson.

Huge thanks goes to Challenge Northumberland, The SILL, Mountain Rescue and the guides from Northumberland National Parks, for helping us to make this day happen.

What an achievement – huge well done to all of the young people, staff and volunteers who participated in this challenge, you should all feel incredibly proud of yourselves.
