Fun Water Sports Day

As per feedback from our annual member survey, more outdoor water activities were requested.  As a response to this and a very generous donation from one of our loyal supporters, The Protector Group we were able to offer a fun water sports day as part of our Membership Programme on Wednesday 29th August in partnership with Cullercoats Bike and Kayak.  The young people were all aged from 11 – 17 years and everyone had a really great day, made all that better that the sun was out and the weather was lovely.  The activity took place in the beautiful sheltered cove at Cullercoats Bay; as well as having lots of fun Sea Kayaking and individual and group stand up paddle boarding, which both took great balance and determination, the group also developed a range of other skills such as teamwork, communication, cooperation and self-motivation.  We also had a visit from the local Lifeguards from the RLNI which with this as well as the great instructors supporting the young people in the sea, the young people took away some very important water safety messages about building water confidence and how to understand and assess risks and stay safe in and around the sea.  All the hard work was rewarded with some much needed fish and chip lunch!

Huge thanks again to our funder The Protector Group, the instructors from Cullercoats Bike and Kayak and the Lifeguards from RLNI. Let’s make next year even more fun if that’s possible!

Young Person Clay Pigeon Shoot

We had another incredibly successful Young Person’s Clay Pigeon Shoot Fun Day on Friday 17th August as part of our Membership Programme.  This continues to be a really popular activity with young people and members, with thanks to the Terry Liffen Fund.  Due to high demand, we had a large group of 28 young people from across our membership network and it was great to see lots of new members there engaging in the activity and meeting other groups.  Everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable day, met new friends and learnt new skills followed off with a lovey meal at the Cook and Barker Inn in Northumberland.

At the fun competition at the end of the day we had a clear winner, Filip Rzepechi of Northboure Youth Initiative with a very impressive score of 10/10, closely followed by Sina Esmati from Northboure Youth Initiative in second place with another great score of 9/10.  Third place however, with another great score of 8/10 went to an exciting shoot off between Liam Hindmarsh from North Tyneside Police Cadets and Kieran Halliday from Hirst Active Youth, with Kieran just coming out on top with third place.  All amazing scores considering this is the first time that the young people have participated in this activity!

The Most Improved Award went to Nathan Fisher from Montagu and North Fenham Football Club.

Well done to all the young people (and adults!) who participated and a huge thank you to our four instructions Glynn, John, Ali and Phil, who were fantastic, as ever.  Can’t wait for next year!

 Some Comments from young people

The Unstoppable Concert

NE Youth are proud to announce that CHANNY– one of their main young Ambassadors and Newcastle’s leading independent solo female artist is set to rocket her career to dizzying heights with ‘The Unstoppable Concert’ at the Metro Radio Arena on Monday 17th December 2018.

Originating from the West End of Newcastle, CHANNY’S down to earth ‘girl next door’ personality shines through both on and off stage. As the young ambassador for NE Youth, CHANNY has created a community driven concert supported by NE Youth, to whom she is donating 50% of the profits, so they can continue the great work we do.

The Unstoppable Party takes place the week before Christmas and will feature some fantastic special guests as well as loads of local dancers and a DJ to warm things up. Whether its a group of teenagers wanting an amazing night out, Mum and daughter Christmas celebration or local companies wanting to hear some fab live music and party the night away- CHANNY’s gig will cater for everyone.

Together as one, CHANNY and NE Youth are making positive change and inspiring other young people that anything is possible. Schools, community groups and fans are invited to join us at the concert; CHANNY is making it her goal to be the role model that she needed growing up.

CHANNY said:

‘Since attending my first concert at the age of 14, I left the venue in absolute awe, feeling so inspired by the whole experience. It has been an absolute dream of mine to headline Metro Radio Arena ever since. The fact that it is actually happening still hasn’t sunk in. What makes this opportunity bigger for me is that I am just a local girl with no management or TV platform, I am working solidly and I am proving that hard work can pay off!’

CHANNY’s mission has been to prove, no matter your background, you get out of life what you’re willing to put in.

To top off the evening CHANNY will be releasing her debut single and hopes to get the crowd behind her to get it into the TOP 40 – maybe even Christmas Number 1?

Generation Code wins Tech4Good Award

We are delighted to announce that the fabulous Generation Code Programme has won an Abilitynet Tech4Good Award.  Please see below announcement from UK Youth and pictures from the awards presentation.

Afternoon Generation Code Partners,

I’m delighted to announce that Generation Code has been announced as the WINNER of the Abilitynet Tech4Good Award in the Digital Skills category! The team here are all deeply proud to have the project recognised at such prestigious awards and it was truly humbling to share the stage with other amazing projects such as Mind of My Own and Be My Eyes, who are all doing fantastic work in using technology for good in the world.

Generation Code would, of course, not be possible without each and every one of the hugely dedicated delivery partners committed to attending trainings, recruiting and supporting Champions, innovating creative delivery approaches and promoting the sessions in your local areas. Each organisation involved in this programme has been vital in trying new ideas, learning from failed attempts and teaching us the realities of working on digital skills development in our sector. This is not easy work, and if it was, it wouldn’t be worth doing!

We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making this project what it is and hope that you join us in taking a moment to receive this national recognition and feel really proud of the work we’ve done and the impact we’ve made collectively.

Please feel free to share this news far and wide, making sure to use the hashtags and handles below to celebrate your success. And below are some pictures from the ceremony, including us pitching on stage and receiving the amazing trophy, which is made of recycled computer parts!

Poster Campaign Launch

We are proud and excited to announce the launch of our first ever outdoor poster campaign to raise awareness of the work we do and to engage more supporters to help make a difference.

Everyone has heard of the North East legends that are Ant & Dec and Alan Shearer but did you know they went to clubs run by NE Youth when they were young? We’ve been helping young people across the region for over 80 years and 2018 we are focusing on recruiting new supporters to get involved and help make a difference.

With the help of Clear Channel and their generous donation of all the media space and Halo Paywear who have sponsored the campaign NE Youth brand will be seen by thousands of people across the region over the next couple of months.

Jon Niblo, CEO of NE Youth said:

‘ This is a fantastic opportunity for NE Youth, smaller charities like ours don’t ever get the chance to run big advertising campaigns because it cost so much. With the support of Clear Channel and Halo Paywear our brand will be seen by 1000s of people across the region. We’ve earmarked 2018 as the year to turn the volume up around our work and let more people know about the work we do with young people- this campaign is great start’

Martin Hall from Halo Paywear added:

‘Halo Paywear are delighted to support this fantastic campaign. Its perfect timing as we are just about to launch our new product.’

(The Halo Wristband is a waterproof, safe & secure contactless payment device which you simply “top up”. It’s ideal for the beach, the pool, the skate park, public transport, shops….in fact it works anywhere with a contactless terminal, and can be used whether you are a teenager or a pensioner, or anybody in between!)

Over the next couple of months the new campaign posters will be up around Newcastle and surrounding areas. NE Youth encourages anyone who sees them to take a minute to learn more about the work we do and also take a selfie and post it on social media.
