Last week, 16 young people visited Swarland for our annual Young Persons’ Clay Pigeon Shoot – a unique opportunity to try something new, build confidence, and enjoy the outdoors.
Selected from our membership and community youth sessions, the group were given a taste of what our larger fundraising shoot days are like. For many, it was their first time experiencing clay shooting and countryside sports.
Safety was the priority throughout. Under the guidance of experienced coaches from the 12 Bores Club, the young people were taught the fundamentals of gun handling, positioning, re-loading, and shooting. Along the way, they developed important qualities such as discipline, focus, patience, and responsibility.
Clay shooting is about much more than hitting targets. It demands concentration, calmness under pressure, and resilience when things don’t go to plan. Each young person practised these skills during the day, and many quickly saw their confidence grow as they improved.
Although there were two trophies up for grabs, the atmosphere was one of encouragement and teamwork. Participants supported one another, celebrated successes, and offered motivation when clays were missed. This mix of friendly competition and camaraderie helped to build strong connections within the group.
Lunch and transport were included, making the event accessible to all and providing time for the young people to relax together, share experiences, and make new friends.
The day ended with the presentation of trophies for the highest points and most improved shooter – both accepted with pride and humility.
Events like our Young Persons’ Clay Pigeon Shoot are about more than sport. They give young people the chance to step outside their normal routines, learn new skills, and discover what they are capable of in a supportive environment. Experiences like these can spark new interests, build lifelong confidence, and leave lasting memories.
We are grateful to all those who made the day possible:
-
The 12 Bores Club, including Glynn Cooper and the coaching team
-
The Cook and Barker Inn for delicious food and refreshments
-
George Hubb and family from Hubbway Plant Hire for use of the land
Thanks to their support, this group of young people enjoyed a safe, exciting and memorable day in the fresh rural air.
