In March 2017 we began working in partnership with UK Youth and Microsoft to deliver a new Generation Code Programme. The creative workshop allowed young people to engage with coding using a Microchip and creating their own games. 5 member organisations engaged in this programme over a two week time period, with a total of 43 young people participating.
We asked young people for 3 words to describe Generation Code:
“New. Interesting. Different.”
“Very fun work”
“Adventurous. Amazing. Fun.”
In Autumn / Winter we delivered two Pathfinders Programmes aimed at young people who wouldn’t usually engage in NCS. We took 32 young people away in total. 18 young people took part in Wave 1 which consisted of an outdoor activity weekend followed by two weekends of social action planning, first aid and a Leadership Level 1 course. Wave 1 planned and completed a 13.5 mile sponsored walk raising £340 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Wave 2 consisted of 14 young people from 4 different countries. Despite some language barriers the groups bonded really well and delivered a multicultural evening of music, food and dance from their respective countries at the Blaydon inclusive session early in 2017. Finally came graduation where they could all celebrate their success with their new friends!
“I enjoyed cooking at Blaydon, tasting foods and learning about Syrian culture.”
“I made new friends, found new confidence and learned new skills.”
